Hazel Beacham

Greer, S.C.

Hazel Beacham, daughter-in-law to Chiquola Mill superintendent Dan Beacham, lived in his home at the time of the shooting in 1934. She provided valuable details to the story "Small Town Secret."

"It's hard to understand those times unless you lived through them. People were walking the roads looking for work. There were long bread lines. People were coming to our house on Main Street begging for food. They were trying to find a job to earn a few cents. People walked [from South Carolina] to Florida—where a little boom had started—trying to get work. It was a terrible time."
