Jerry Lewis as The Nutty Professor
Jerry Lewis was born 97 years ago today.
A comedian, actor, singer, film producer, screenwriter and film director, Lewis was known for his slapstick humor in film, television, stage and radio. He was originally paired up with Dean Martin in 1946, forming the famed comedy team of Martin and Lewis.
In addition to the duo's popular nightclub work, Martin and Lewis starred in a successful series of comedy films for Paramount Pictures.
Lewis was also known as the host, for more than 40 years, of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual Labor Day Telethon and national chairman of the MDA.
On February 22, 2009, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Lewis the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Lewis died at his home in Las Vegas on August 20, 2017, at the age of 91. The cause was end-stage cardiac disease and peripheral artery disease.
